Course description
Course on Image Verified approach to DBS Surgery.
As Medical Imaging improves, it becomes possible not only to see the anatomical target for DBS surgery but also to verify that the leads have reached the correct location. There is evidence that lead location on post-op MRI is more predictive of clinical outcome than MER recording. In addition there is the added benefit of being able to offer surgery to patients under general anesthesia without having to withdraw from PD medication.
This course will allow participants to explore the methods required to adopt an Image Verified approach to DBS surgery in their own institution.
Target audience
We suggest that centers send representative delegates from neurosurgery, neurology and neuroradiology or MRI physics (a maximum of 2 centers will join a meeting to allow 1-to-1 discussions).
Learning objectives
The Monday morning will cover a series of didactic lectures followed by a discussion; the afternoon includes a multidisciplinary meeting around patient selection, and/or a workshop on targeting, using different images and targets. Safety briefing for observing the iMRI interventions the following day. On Tuesday, the delegates will attend the surgery to see how the approach works in live conditions.
Parallel tracks for Monday afternoon:
- Clinicians in clinic session
- Radiologist/MR physicist do the targeting and MRI machine settings and review.
On Tuesday, specific targeting and planning for the 2 patients to be implanted.
