Biography
Dr Stephanie O. Breukink has worked as a colorectal consultant at Maastricht University Medical Center since 2009. In 2006, she finalized her PhD with the thesis: Laparoscopic Total Mesorectal Excision for rectal cancer’, which focused on the quality of life of patients with rectal cancer who underwent laparoscopic surgery. For this work, she received the ‘Schoemaker Prize 2006’ which stands for the best Dutch surgical thesis in that year.
Afterwards she spent two years working in Adelaide, Australia as a colorectal fellow. There she particularly focused on the different surgical treatments for patients with intestinal problems due to cancer or due to non-malignant diseases of the intestine.
In 2009, she returned to the Netherlands and has been working as consultant since then.
Her main interest is to improve the quality of life of patients who underwent colorectal resections and to improve long-term sequela of these treatments.
Another interest is proctology. She is PI and collaborator of international guidelines for patients having hemorrhoidal disease, perianal fistulas or fecal incontinence. Meanwhile, she is associate professor and has published more than 160 international publications and supervised several PhD students.
Besides she teaches medical students and surgical residents.
